New Security Restrictions from Australia

New security restrictions from Australia

Delta customers flying from Australia will find new security measures in place regarding powdered substances in carry-on baggage. The new regulations introduced by The Department of Home Affairs apply to:

·        All nonstop international flights, for example SYD-LAX

·        International flights with connections, for example CNS-SYD-LAX

What are the changes from Australia?

New security restrictions apply to the carriage of inorganic powders in aircraft cabins for outbound international flights.

·        Inorganic powders (e.g. salt, sand, talcum powder) are limited to a total volume of 350ml/g or less per passenger in the aircraft cabin.

·        There is no limit for organic powders (e.g. food, powdered baby formula, coffee, sugar), but these must be removed from carry-on baggage and placed separately into trays for x-ray examination.

·        Exemptions apply for organic powders (including baby products), medical or therapeutic products, cremated remains and duty free powders contained in security tamper evident bags with proof of purchase.

The above restrictions apply in addition to existing rules regarding liquids, gels, aerosols and creams.

Restrictions from the United States

Stronger security measures regarding powder-like substances have also been rolled out in the United States by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The rules apply to both international and domestic flights.

·        Powder-like substances greater than 350 ml/g must be placed in a separate bin for X-ray screening.

·        They may require additional screening and containers may need to be opened.

·        Customers are encouraged to place non-essential powders greater than 350 ml/g in checked bags.
