Delta Implements Second Baggage Fee for Delta-Marketed Itineraries to/from Transpacific Markets

Delta has implemented a second bag fee for Transpacific economy class (Main Cabin and Delta Comfort+) travel on Delta marketed (DL- or KE- operated) flights. With this change, passengers with tickets purchased on/after May 3, 2021, and a first flight marketed by Delta, including flights operated by partners, will now be charged $100 to check a second bag.

Passengers traveling in Delta One and Delta Premium Select will continue to receive two checked bags for free. SkyMiles Medallion members get an additional free checked baggage across all classes of service.

The second baggage fee will apply to the following markets and itineraries

  • US/CA/MX to/from AU, CN, JP, KR, HK, ID, KH, LA, MM, MN, MY, PH, SG, TH, TW, VN NZ, FJ, GU, PW, MP, PG
  • Any APAC itinerary where the marketing carrier on the first flight is DL* (Delta marketed). Example below.

FAQs

When is the second bag fee going to be effective?

Passengers with tickets purchased on/after May 3, 2021, and a first flight that is marketed by Delta, including flights operated by partners, will be charged $100 USD to check a second bag.

What flights and APAC markets does the second bag fee apply to?

  • US/CA/MX to/from AU, CN, JP, KR, HK, ID, KH, LA, MM, MN, MY, PH, SG, TH, TW, VN NZ, FJ, GU, PW, MP, PG.
  • Any APAC itinerary where the marketing carrier on the first flight is DL* (Delta marketed).

What is the second baggage fee cost?

Second Main Cabin / Delta Comfort+ bag is $100 USD.

Why might two passengers on the same flight be charged different amounts to check a second bag?

Bag Fees are assessed based on the attributes of the ticket and may vary based on the ticket issue date and first marketed carrier on the itinerary.

  • Ticket Issue Dates
    • Passengers with a ticket issued before May 3 will not be charged a 2nd bag fee of $100 USD
    • Passengers with a ticket issued on or after May 3 will be a charged a 2nd bag fee of $100 USD

-AND-

  • Marketing Carriers
    • Passengers whose first flight is marketed by DL will be charged the bag fee
    • Passengers whose first flight is marketed by OA will not be charged the bag fee

Will SkyMiles Medallion members be impacted by the bag fee change?

Yes, SkyMiles Medallion members (Silver through Diamond) will have their free checked baggage allowance reduced from three (3) bags to two (2) bags. The fee for the third bag will be $200 USD and there will be no other changes.

Will AMEX Cardholders be impacted by the bag fee change?

Yes, AMEX SkyMiles Gold Card cardholders will have their free checked baggage allowance reduced from two (2) bags to one (1) bag. The fee for the second bag will be $100 USD.

Will Military Bags be impacted by the bag fee change?

There will be no changes to Military baggage allowance.

Will existing Corporate Programs be impacted by the bag fee change?

Programs that currently include a specified free checked baggage allowance will remain unchanged.

When the first operated flight (i.e., first outbound leg of the entire itinerary) is impacted by a schedule change will the passenger be subject to the second baggage fee at check-in if their flight is reaccommodated from KE*/DL to DL*/DL?

The itinerary would follow the baggage policy that was in effect on the original ticket date for the new marketing carrier of their first flight. A change from KE*/DL to DL*/DL would result in the customer having 1 free bag (if the original ticketing date is 5/3 or after) or 2 free bags (if the original ticketing date is before 5/3). A change from DL*/DL to KE*/DL would result in the customer having 2 free bags.

When determining baggage allowance and fees, does it make any difference whether the ticket is issued on DL 006 or KE 180?

No. Baggage allowance and fees are determined by the marketing carrier of the first flight.

If an agency reissues a ticket on/after May 3, 2021, due to a schedule change, do the original baggage rules apply or will the new baggage rules apply?

If the marketing carrier of the first flight stays the same, the baggage rules in place at the time of the original ticketing date will apply.  No special documentation is needed.

The customer purchased a ticket before May 3, 2021 and is making a change to their outbound. The ticket was reissued on/after May 3, 2021 and Delta is the marketing carrier on the first operated flight. Does the original baggage rule or the new baggage rule apply?

If a change is made to the outbound and the ticket is reissued on/after May 3, 2021, and Delta is the marketing carrier on the first operated flight, then Delta’s bag policies based off the original ticket date would apply.

The customer purchased their ticket before May 3, 2021. Prior to departure they are making a voluntary change to their continuing flights or their return requiring the ticket to be reissued. If Delta is the marketing carrier on the first operated flight, does the original baggage rule or the new baggage rule apply?

The baggage policy is determined by the marketing carrier of the first operated flight.  If a voluntary change is made to any portion of the ticket prior to departure and the ticket is reissued on/after May 3, 2021, the baggage policy from the original ticketing date would apply.

The customer purchased their ticket before May 3, 2021; Delta is the marketing carrier on the first operated flight. If the customer has already traveled their outbound and are now making a voluntary change to their continuing flights or their return, will the original baggage rule or the new baggage rule apply?

The baggage rule is determined by the marketing carrier for the first operated flight. If the ticket was issued on/before May 3, 2021 and the customer has already traveled their outbound and then makes a change to their continuing or return flights, the original baggage rule would still apply.

Will our airline partners be responsible for collecting the additional baggage fees?

Yes, if a passenger is flying on a Delta marketed, partner operated flight, as their first flight, the partner airline would collect the bag fees. View examples below for further guidance
