Delta Air Lines will continue to grow its fuel-efficient, state-of-the-art Airbus A220 fleet, exercising rights to purchase 12 new A220-300 aircraft. 

It is the latest step towards Delta’s ongoing upgrade and streamlining of its fleet, investing in more sustainable aircraft that provide an elevated customer experience.

The announcement was made at the Farnborough International Airshow in the U.K., the global showcase for innovation in air travel and aerospace. It follows Delta’s announcement of 100 new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, another milestone in the airline’s journey to reshape the future of air travel.

Quiet and comfortable, the amenity-rich 130-seat narrowbody offers customers the in-flight experience of a widebody aircraft. Featuring 12 First Class, 30 Comfort+ and 88 Main Cabin seats, our A220-300 aircraft will serve customers traveling domestically and to our coastal hubs. 

Delta’s growing A220 fleet reinforces the airline’s commitment to sustainability. Powered by Pratt and Whitney’s latest-generation geared turbofan GTF engines, the A220 offers 25% better fuel efficiency than the aircraft it replaces.

Delta took delivery of its first Airbus A220 in October 2018 and was the first U.S. carrier to operate the aircraft type. 

“Delta was the U.S. launch customer for the A220, and with this incremental order, it’s clear the airline and its passengers are pleased with both the economy and comfort of the aircraft,” said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International. “The A220 bridges the gap between single-aisle and regional aircraft, and complements Delta’s A320 family fleet by providing short field performance with long range.” 

Delta currently has 11 A220-300s in service and 51 on order, including the 12 purchase rights exercised today, which are slated for delivery beginning in 2026. In addition, Delta currently operates a fleet of 45 109-seat A220-100 aircraft.
