DOT Serious Communicable Disease Policy
Effective April 28, 2025 and in line with the Department of Transportation rules issued in April 2024 to assist airline passengers, Delta may offer a transferable travel credit valid for 5 years, or in Delta’s discretion, a refund to the original form of payment, in each case less a processing fee of $100, to assist passengers who are unable to travel due to a serious communicable disease. This policy applies to passengers who have booked to travel to, from, or within the U.S.
Eligibility
A Serious Communicable Disease is defined as a disease that can:
- Cause serious health consequences (e.g., breathing problems, organ damage, neurological difficulties, or death); and
- Be easily transmitted by casual contact in an aircraft cabin environment (e.g., by sitting next to or talking to someone, shaking hands, or touching communal surfaces)
Customers may be eligible to cancel if:
- They have or might have contracted a Serious Communicable Disease, and a medical professional recommends they should not travel around others via public transit, or
- There is a public health emergency at the origin or destination of your itinerary, and they should not travel to protect their health from a Serious Communicable Disease
Please note, there may be medical conditions which result in a passenger who is unable or unwilling to travel, but this policy is to protect both the passenger as well as the traveling public, and therefore requires that the illness is both Serious and Communicable.
How Customer May Request a Refund for a Serious Communicable Disease
As detailed above, Delta may offer, in its discretion, a refund to the original form of payment less a processing fee of $100 to assist passengers who are unable to travel due to a Serious Communicable Disease. To request a refund, customers must:

- Have the attending medical professional complete and sign the form
